iPhones are being marketed as the next best thing providing instant access to the web, allowing you to watch films, play music and store photos. For business people out on the road this new technology can be a great asset providing constant access to the office whilst allowing some leisure time in between meetings. However it appears that these phones are not all they seem and for some people they have been crashing and have become simply unusable.

This problem has been dubbed as ‘coma mode’ and when your iPhone is afflicted you will not be able to make or receive calls or emails. The phone is useless until you go through a ‘hard reboot’ which is like rebooting a PC when it crashes. To make matters worse you might not notice the phone is in ‘coma mode’ until you pick it up to use it meaning it could be down for hours before you notice there’s a problem.

One iPhone user, Paul Hatton resorted to carrying around a spare mobile phone in case his iPhone failed. He recalled:

“With no warning or indication as to why it happened the wifi access failed completely. (The phone) was not working properly, it became unstable. People would dial in and the tone would be that of a phone that’s been cut off and it would go to sleep. It would fall into what’s referred to as a coma.”

It seems that the problems are due to applications or ‘apps’ as they are called by Apple. These ‘apps’ offer many nifty benefits such as GPS but they can also create issues. He explained:

“The difficulty is that it’s a skittish kind of a thing. It doesn’t happen every time, it just happens in certain circumstances depending on how much you have stored on the Apple phone, how many applications you have, which applications you have and which version of the operating system.”

To keep up to date with this issue read mobile phone reviews and make sure you know how well their products are performing before you buy one. There are plenty of sites like Ciao and Blagger.com to check out.

O2 have come under fire from BBC Watchdog after the residents and local businesses of Hampshire’s Liphook village got in touch when the mobile phone signal for the area vanished completely.

Anyone with an O2 mobile was left without a reliable signal and at times the signal was completely down. This was disastrous for businesses and consumers alike and many had to drive outside of the village just to call someone.

The problems with an intermittent signal carried on for a month and eventually the amount of O2 complaints hit the roof. However the mobile phone giant was less than helpful. One of the residents, Jane Wright, explained that after having had a good signal previously she was very concerned when she started suffering coverage problems. When she contacted O2 she was further disappointed:

“When you can finally get through to them, half the time it’s, “we haven’t heard there’s a problem”.

Eventually O2 informed Jane the problem would be resolved and it did get better for a few days but then the old issues resurfaced. Again O2 gave Jane another date but this time advised her that they couldn’t promise it would be put right.

This is when BBC Watchdog stepped in and took a leading expert in mobile communications, John Raw, to investigate. It was identified that it was a simple problem with the signal tower – an issue that could be resolved within 24 hours.

While the Watchdog team were filming an engineer arrived to fix the problem and by the end of that day the village was back in signal.

O2 apologised for the inconvenience to its Lidhook customers and went on to say:

“We are keen to encourage customers who have been affected by the loss of service in Liphook to call our Customer Services team and we will discuss and review their bill with them.”

This highlights how important it is to check out mobile network reviews for business users before signing up for a mobile phone contract. Although the service provider may state there is coverage in an area it is always worth double checking the experience of other users before you commit.

One of the main disadvantages of flying is being unable to use your mobile phone while in the air. For many people this is a serious problem, because being out of touch with texts and emails for several hours at a time can be unbearable.

Virgin Atlantic has the answer though, and will be upgrading systems on ten of their new Airbus A330-300s to allow passengers to use email and text messaging services during flight by 2011.

Virgin announced that for 2011 Virgin will offer the service for passengers using systems such as Blackberry, PDAs and other devices. This news on the back of the announcement that Virgin will be spending $2.1 billion on its ten new planes, Airbus A330-300 aircrafts.

The new planes will be full of technical wizardry, including USB ports and the functionality to use mobile devices, but not for making calls.

With businesses forced to keep expenditures down as much as possible, travel expenses for meetings, especially those abroad, are one of the first areas where cuts are made. Of course, if you cut back on your travel to meetings and pitches, you can be seriously affecting your potential to earn profit and clinch deals.

A much cheaper way of conducting business meetings, client meetings and making pitches is with video conferencing. By using video conferencing facilities, which can be on site or even through your own PC, you’re able to conduct face to face meetings without leaving your office. This reduces your costs in travelling and also saves you the time in getting to your destination.

Video conferencing has proved very popular in recent years as the technology has improved and is used by large corporations and small businesses alike.

We’ve all been there; you’re in the most important presentation of your business life and things just keep going wrong. Your mouth goes dry, your head empties of thought, your laptop won’t connect to the projector and you can’t find the presentation file.

It’s the worst feeling you can have in business, and you tend to do in front of the most important people. In order to be prepared, we’ve compiled a list of some of the things that go wrong with a presentation, so you know what to look out for.

Laptop battery dies
This is a common problem and would kill your presentation dead unless you have backup. Make sure you have a spare battery and your power cable.

Projector doesn’t work
Connecting your laptop to the projector isn’t always easy so give yourself plenty of time. Make sure you know how to do it and who speak to if the projector needs attention, such as replacement projector lamps.

Your mind goes blank
This can be helped by knowing your presentation backwards. Practice and more practice is the key, so make sure you do your homework and you shouldn’t have any nightmares.

Virgin Trains has finally introduced wireless Internet access for passengers on its West Coast main line trains. The service was supposed to have been introduced years ago, but suffered great delays.

The Wi-Fi is being provided by T-Mobile and will afford passengers uninterrupted wireless Internet access, even when the trains are going through tunnels. A spokeswoman for Virgin Trains stated:

Wireless internet is now live across our Pendolino fleet and the service is forecast to be up and running in our Super Voyager trains by this summer.

The wireless net installation commenced last year, and receivers for the Internet have been installed gradually on each train. The installation has now been completed.

First class passengers can use the wireless net access free of charge while they are on the trains, plus they can use it in the business lounge at train stations.
